Muslims and Christians Join in Celebration
With an Iftar Dinner at Parkwoods
August 10, 2011

This summer, the people of Parkwoods were invited to participate in a special celebration.

The Intercultural Dialogue Institute celebrates intercultural dialogue between many faith Communities in Toronto and Rev. Randy received an invitation for the Parkwoods congregation to be hosted by the Turkish Muslim community of Don Mills and Scarborough for an Iftar dinner and to join in the celebration of Ramadan.

Iftar refers to the evening meal when Muslims break their fast during the month of Ramadan.  Iftar is one of the religious observances of Ramadan and is often done as a community, with people gathering to break their fast together.

Some eighty Turkish Muslims and Parkwoods people gathered in the George Connolly Hall at Parkwoods to break the fast and to share conversation.  Loreen Naylor  opened the evening with welcoming words to all and introduced Faruk Arslan, Director of Interfaith Affairs at the Intercultural Dialogue Institute and Muhammet Gul, Imam for the Turkish community in Don Mills and Scarborough.  The men and women and Imam Gul organized the evening as well as providing the food for a plentiful buffet. During Ramadan the fast is broken at sunset and at that time, Imam Gul officially said the words to break the fast.  We noted one interesting difference in our faith traditions.  In the Christian tradition, we give thanks before we eat and in the Muslim tradition thanks is given after the meal.  David Bone, co-chair of Parkwoods Council said the Christian Grace before dinner and Imam Gul said thanks at the conclusion of our meal together. It was a special time of sharing, celebration and an opportunity to strengthen relationships and learn about each other.

October 17, 2010 - 'Name That Tune'
This event was a cabaret style afternoon of fun and music. Our musicians played mystery tunes and there
was a challenging quiz, with only the second line of words from a song as a clue! Irish dancing and a
sing song rounded out the afternoon.
