EXTREME HUNGER APPEAL – MONTH OF JUNE

Excerpted Message from the United Church of Canada website:

“More people face famine today than in any time in modern history. We are called to respond to the needs of our sisters and brothers in a compassionate and timely manner. Your generous gifts help United Church partners provide a wide-range of life-saving assistance.

People in Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen have been severely impacted by prolonged or recurring drought, as well as conflict in some of the affected countries that have caused extreme hunger and starvation. The UN has declared a famine in South Sudan.”

On May 29, the Canadian Government announced that donations to the United Church’s Extreme Hunger Appeal will be matched, dollar for dollar this month.

To receive tax relief for your donation, envelopes pre-marked “Extreme Hunger Appeal” will be on the refreshment tables at the back of the sanctuary and on the table outside the church office, for the next Sundays in June. For tax eligibility, please make your cheques payable to Parkwoods United Church.

Further details are available from www.united-church.ca and/or from John Horton. Many thanks for giving this appeal your prayerful consideration.

PARKWOODS ART CLASSES – RESUME IN SEPTEMBER

Watercolour art classes will resume in September. Classes are held in Parkwoods Church Hall Wednesday mornings from 10:00 a.m. until 12 noon. The cost for class instruction is $60.00 for a five week session. Please contact Glory Wigle at the church office to register.

Come and join us for enjoyable, inspiring, creative and relaxing classes with our professional art instructor, Melinda Calway.

PARKWOODS NAME TAGS

There have been a number of new people attending our Sunday services during the year and we would like to request that you wear your name tags to help them meet our members. If you do not have a Name Tag, the church office will make one for you. You can leave your name on the sheet that is available at the coffee tables after the Sunday worship service.

MILK BAG MATS

We are still collecting washed and dried milk bags. The bags are cut into strips and crocheted or woven into mats. The mats are then shipped to weather ravaged countries for the less fortunate to sleep on. Please don’t put these bags in the garbage, bring them to the church for recycling! There is a box outside the church office marked ‘Milk Bags’ for your contributions.

PRAYER REQUESTS

Whenever you are in the Parkwoods lobby, take a minute to write a prayer request for the coming Sunday in our Prayer Request Book. Recent prayers have included names of those needing specific mention as well as those needs identified for general and inclusive prayers. It is also fitting to include prayers of thanksgiving and for memorial flowers. Prayers for the world/country/city are always appropriate.
